Gadgets world is getting a surprise gift in the form of BQ Aquarius E4.5 Ubuntu Edition. This device is nothing new; only its Ubuntu OS edition is. For now, however, it is being launched only in Europe. At nearly 170 Euros a piece, it does seem rather expensive.
BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition is basically gesture driven device. It comes with a 4.5 inch screen like the Android (KitKat) edition. The touch screen is IPS LCD screen with 540 pixels by 960 pixels resolution. The device has decent battery life of 2150 mAH. The front camera in it is of 5 megapixels, and the one in the rear is of 8 mega pixels. As far as connectivity is concerned this device with Linux-based OS offers 3G, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth facilities.
The quad-core processor in the device is 1.3 GHz Media Tek. It has a RAM of 1 GB apart from internal storage memory of 8 GB.
Smartphone market is nearly saturated. Adding another OS to it is hardly going to help. At the best, die-hard fans of Ubuntu and those who are curious about the features and capabilities of the new OS are likely to buy the product. The limited edition launch in Europe may actually be a negative for it as its presence would not be felt nor missed given the limited number of Linux users. The device is thick too, and this may actually force people to shift to Android devices and soon leave Linux behind. To top it all, the price is certainly not something that would prompt people to buy it for its novelty. In all probability, the product would fail.
