Taiwan’s mobile phones and tablets manufacturer, HTC has been steadily losing its market share. The company is desperately trying to retain its foothold with its plans to introduce a phablet in near future. A few weeks ago, gadgets world got a glimpse of what was in store for them from this company. The new phablet is actually a smartphone, albeit mid-range. Recent disclosure by the company on its Sina Weibo page has confirmed that the leaked images were reliable. The new phablet is christened as Desire 8.
While the company has provided some information about Desire 8, there have been no disclosures about the specifications of this product. This has sent gadgets world into a tizzy speculating about what may or may not be included in the product. Expectations are that the device would have a screen of 5.5 inches. In addition, it would have stereo speakers on its front face. People are also speculating that the device could have two cameras; the front facing one would be of 5 megapixels, whereas the one on its back would be of 13-megapixel. Other features that people expect the device to have include dual SIM, sleek design, onscreen buttons, and multiple colors including cyan, yellow, red, orange, and white.
The market also expects the company to introduce the product in upcoming MWC, which this year would be held on February, 24, in Barcelona. It may be recalled that initial expectation was that this product would first be introduced in China.
The phablet market is just beginning to spread usurping the position hitherto occupied by Tablets and Smartphones. Since Desire 8 is a mid range product, it will certainly have its market demarcated in the present scenario. Any delay in launching the product may, however, give other phablets and smartphone manufacturers an opportunity to absorb the demand. Therefore, HTC would be better of launching its product at the earliest.
