iTerm – iPhone app now used to track Parkinson’s disease

Your iPhone apps no longer remain just a means to entertain you but also to collect the data about hand and arm tremors and display the result. This new gadget has been developed by the researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. This program is referred to as iTrem and can be offered to the users from App Store that sells iPhone applications. But prior approval from the Food and Drug Administration is required and it will also undergo a medical study at the Emory University.

Benefits of iTrem

A research scientist along with another GTRI scientist has claimed this device to be very useful tool for the patients and their doctors. Apart from this, the use of this device will be very convenient and cost-effective.

Working of iTrem

The iTerm makes use of the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer for collecting the data regarding the patient in or outside his home. This device can track the tremor information very accurately and is designed to record the tremor data using simple puzzle games. The data stored can then be processed and easily transmitted. The GTRI team even presented a paper on iTrem highlighting about its unique features. The paper was presented at the International Conference on Health in 2011.
