Get A Hands-On Experience Of The i-mate 9502

The mobile market is indeed very fickle territory, what with several new brands and models being released every single day. The latest rage here, now, is the i-mate “Ultimate” 9502 smartphone. The i-mate Ultimate line has evolved much through the last few years, but this one is deemed as truly cutting-edge smartphone technology.

The very high-end i-mate 9502 is packed with powerful features – in fact, it is said to be the most feature-laden WinMo Professional smartphone till date. Read on to know more about this one….

This very attractive device, announced way back in 2007, is a wee bit bigger-built than the Blackjack. The i-mate 9502 is powered by a Qualcomm 400MHz processor and runs Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional. It comes with a neat sliding display, under which lies hidden, a full QWERTY keyboard. The QWERTY keyboard is wide enough and gives enough space for easy finger movement, though the feedback factor might not be quite at par with the i-mate 8502, which is truly great with that feature.

Tech specs of the i-mate 9502

Supporting 2G, 3G, quad-band GSM and triband UMTS/HSDPA networks, the i-mate 9502 weighs 200gms. Of course, this is quite heavy, compared to the smartphones available today. The huge size of the i-mate 9502 is one of its biggest drawbacks. Otherwise, this handheld is remarkably tough and durable to handle.

It comprises an impressive 2.8” TFT VGA resistive touchscreen display, 3.15MP camera with LED flash and VGA videocall camera, 2.5mm audio jack, almost unlimited phonebook, photocall and microSD card slot for expandable memory. Additionally, the i-mate 9502 also supports GPRS, EDGE, WLAN, WiFi, Video Telephony, Integrated GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 and Infrared. Navigating its various menus is made easy with an additional joystick.

The casing feels solid too – it is a combination of plastic and metal. The screen is surrounded in all sides with polished metallic bezel, which is quite eye-catching. Further, there is a light sensor, so the buttons automatically light up, so that you can use this device easily even in pitch darkness.

Other features

  • The i-mate 9502 also comes with features such as SMS, MMS, Email, Push Email, IM, HTML, Java, Media Player with various audio formats and Pocket Office. Coming with talk time up to 4 hours, the i-mate 9502 also offers up to 180 hours stand-by time. The i-mate 9502 is now available in Black.
  • Two things that are truly different about this handheld are Custom i-Q and Secure i-Q, both of which require you to register on i-mate’s Website. Custom i-Q lets you define settings for features such as Exchange server, emails and also upload WinMo apps. You could save them for future use on a different device. You could even completely erase all your data existing on your present i-mate and then download all the previous settings in one simple step. Secure i-Q, on the other hand, helps you lock or erase data from any desktop browser with an Internet connection.
  • One other handy feature of the i-mate Ultimate 9502 is a TV-out, a cable that connects to the mini-USB connector. The other end connects to a projector or TV, with jacks for audio and video.

Inside the box

The packaging of the i-mate 9502 includes one power cable with international plugs, genuine leather case, USB cable, miniUSB to composite cable, extra stylus, getting started guide and other reading materials as well.

Though a powerful smartphone, the i-mate 9502 still requires a few tweaks, such as integrated apps, more user-friendly UI and maybe even an OS upgrade to WinMo 6.1. Check out the video below to get a good idea about this handheld.
