Microsoft has been trying to make inroads in Apple’s market with its Office developed exclusively for Macs. The last such release was in 2011. In March 2015, Microsoft launched the beta version of its new Office 2016 suite and is now releasing the official version.
The suite includes updated versions of all the traditional Windows applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, and Outlook. Also, Microsoft has added cloud functionality. This cloud functionality is Microsoft’s answer to several web-based businesses and Google Drive.
The product has several first of its kind for Mac users. For starters, Office 2016 suite is the first to be released for OS X, utilizing Ribbon user interface. Ribbon UI is common in all variants of Windows released since 2010. An office 365 subscription needs to be bought for Apple gadgets for using this new office suite. It will cost approximately $100, but it can be paid at the rate of $9.99 every month.
In so far as gadgets world is concerned, competition reduces prices and makes new technologies available at affordable price. If Microsoft’s latest Office suite becomes popular amongst Mac users, there will be something for this former leader to rejoice about.
